Cocoa is said to have been introduced by the ancient Maya to Central America from the South American highlands of the Amazon and Orinoco basins.

The natural environment of the shade-grown trees is the Amazon rainforest.

They prefer climates within 10-20 degrees of the equator.

The trees respond well to relatively high temperatu res and humid tropical climates.
